Funding grants for support scientific conferences and workshops – Year 2024

The PLuS Foundation Basel (https://www.patrumlumensustine.com/)

is launching for the year 2024

competitive grants to support scientific conferences and workshops in the fields of Classics/Greek and Latin Literature, Classical Archaeology, the Archaeology and Art History
of the Middle Ages, and the Reception of Ancient and Medieval Culture in the Western Tradition.


All scientific conferences and workshops in the above-mentioned fields are eligible for funding by
PLuS, regardless of their format or the country or place in which they are held. Funding
applications are assessed solely according to the criterion of excellence. PLuS supports conferences
held in English, French, German, Italian, Latin, Portuguese or Spanish.

Available funding, eligibility criteria and deadlines

For the calendar year 2024, the PLuS foundation will support scientific conferences and workshops with a total sum of 15.000 €. A conference supported in either round may not take later than 1 July 2025.
Funding is provided exclusively for the effective costs of the conference or workshop; this may include the cost of travel, accommodation and catering but salary costs or overhead costs cannot be covered by the grant. It is at the discretion of the Foundation to decide whether the costs will be covered in full or in part. All recipients of conference grants are required to advertise the support from PLuS and to include the Foundation’s logo both in the conference programme and in the conference proceedings or other publications that arise from the conference.

Application procedure

The application may be written in German, English, French or Italian. The dossier is to be
submitted electronically in a single PDF file to be uploaded via the web-form on the Foundation’s
homepage; it must contain the following documents:

  • CV incl. list of publications of all designated conference organisers
  • Detailed description of the envisaged conference that may not exceed a maximum of 20.000 characters (incl. spaces); it is to be structured as follows:
    • Conference topic / research question
    • State of previous research
    • List of designated contributors of which a minimum of 50% have confirmed their attendance
    • Conference programme with titles and abstracts of individual contributions (in exceptional cases the requirement of abstracts may be waived)
    • Applicants’ own previous research
    • Approach in terms of method and theoretical horizon
    • Plans for the publication of proceedings (where applicable)
    • Bibliography (limited to the most important titles)
  • Detailed information on any funding already received as well as on funding applications submitted to other funding bodies

Relatives (up to the fourth degree) of members of the Beirat or the Stiftungsrat of PLuS may not
submit an application.

Evaluation procedure and decision

All applications are reviewed by the Beirat of the PLuS Foundation, which may consult external
reviewers. The Beirat assesses the applications solely according to the criterion of excellence.
Applicants who do not meet the requirements will be excluded from the application process; the
reasons for the exclusion will be given to the applicant in writing. In the case of equal merit,
applications from junior researchers will be prioritised.

The final decision is made by the Foundation’s Stiftungsrat, which publishes the result of the
selection process on the Foundation’s homepage (https://www.patrumlumensustine.com/).
Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail no later than 40 days after the closing date of the
application round; they will be required to sign a grant agreement. If a successful applicant
withdraws her/his application, a grant may instead be offered to the next-placed candidate according
to the rank order of applications.

Grant decisions by the Foundation are not subject to appeal.

Complete application dossiers must be submitted by 30 November 2024 via the web
form on the Foundation’s homepage. Late or incomplete applications will not be processed.
